5 Reasons Why Chiropractic Care Might Help Your Child

As parents, we’re quick to notice fevers or coughs — but musculoskeletal problems in children can be subtle. With long school days, heavy backpacks, competitive sport, and increased screen time, spinal strain is becoming more common. While occasional aches are part of growing up, persistent symptoms may warrant further assessment. Here are five signs your child may benefit from seeing a chiropractor.

1. Persistent Neck or Back Pain

Back and neck pain are not just adult problems. Research suggests lifetime prevalence of spinal pain in adolescents ranges between 30–50% (Jeffries et al., 2007).¹ Importantly, children who experience back pain are more likely to report back pain in adulthood (Hestbaek et al., 2006).²

If your child regularly complains of stiffness or discomfort — especially after school, sport, or long periods sitting — it may indicate joint restriction, postural overload, or muscular imbalance.

2. Poor Posture and Screen-Related Strain

Rounded shoulders, forward head posture, and slouched sitting are increasingly common. Prolonged screen time has been associated with higher rates of neck and shoulder pain in adolescents (Straker et al., 2018).³

A chiropractor can assess spinal alignment and movement patterns, and provide practical advice on posture, ergonomic setup, and strengthening exercises to reduce ongoing strain.

3. Frequent Headaches

Headaches in children are common, with tension-type headaches often linked to muscular tightness and cervical spine dysfunction. Manual therapies, including mobilisation and spinal manipulation, have shown potential benefit for some headache types (Chaibi et al., 2017).⁴

If headaches are accompanied by neck stiffness or postural strain, a musculoskeletal assessment may help identify contributing factors.

4. Recurring Sports Injuries or Reduced Performance

Children involved in sport place repeated stress on growing bodies. Recurrent ankle sprains, knee discomfort, or ongoing tightness may reflect biomechanical imbalances higher up the kinetic chain — including the pelvis or spine.

Research highlights the importance of addressing movement dysfunction early to reduce injury risk and improve performance outcomes (Emery et al., 2015).⁵ Chiropractors assess joint mobility, muscular control, and coordination, and can work alongside coaches and other health professionals to support recovery.

5. Uneven Gait or Clumsiness

If your child appears unusually clumsy, trips frequently, or shows asymmetrical movement patterns, it may relate to joint restriction or altered neuromuscular control. While many coordination issues are developmental, persistent asymmetry warrants evaluation.

Early assessment of movement patterns may help optimise balance and motor control during key growth phases.

Care typically includes thorough history-taking, postural and movement assessment, and clear communication with parents. Chiropractors also recognise when referral to a GP or specialist is appropriate. The goal is not simply adjustment, but supporting healthy movement, growth, and function

Is Chiropractic Care Safe for Children?

A common concern among parents is safety. Importantly, paediatric chiropractic care is very different from adult treatment. Techniques are gentle, low-force, and specifically adapted to a child’s age, size, and stage of development. In many cases, the pressure used is comparable to checking the ripeness of a tomato.

A 2015 systematic review examining manual therapy in children reported that serious adverse events are rare (Todd et al., 2015).⁶ When performed by a qualified practitioner trained in paediatric care, treatment is considered low risk.

Importantly, Dr Anthony and Dr Carol are very experienced chiropractors with families of their own. They understand the value of chiropractic care for enhancing the health of our children.

A Balanced Approach

Chiropractic care for children should always be gentle, age-appropriate, and evidence-informed. It works best as part of a broader health strategy that includes regular physical activity, strength development, adequate sleep, and good ergonomic habits.

A little bit of prevention with periodic check ups can go a long way to keep a child’s spine healthy!
