Sciatica

Is sciatica stopping you in your tracks?

If you are experiencing pain that begins in your lower back or buttock and radiates into one or both of your legs, you might have sciatica.

Sciatica describes back-related leg pain, because of irritation to the sciatic nerve – the nerve responsible for the sensory supply to the skin of the buttocks, back of the thigh, the lower leg and foot. The sciatic nerve also gives mobility to many leg muscles.

If you have sciatica, you may also experience:

  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Muscle weakness
  • Groin pain, in some cases

What causes sciatica?

There are many possible causes of sciatica, but the three main causes are:

  • Lumbar disc prolapse – this causes irritation or compression of a spinal nerve root and produces radiating pain.
  • Referred pain from low back or pelvic joints
  • Referred pain from muscle or myofascial trigger points in the buttocks

Chiropractic can help!

At Simply Health, we are qualified to offer chiropractic care, in conjunction with other modalities such as dry needling, cold laser therapy and neurological rehabilitation.

Your first visit will start with a comprehensive evaluation where we talk about your symptoms and medical history. We perform a thorough physical examination.  In some cases, we may recommend X-rays or MRI scans to help us fully understand your condition.

Chiropractic treatment for sciatica focuses on spinal manipulation and alignment to provide pain relief and stimulate the body’s ability to heal. Depending on your condition, other methods such as myotherapy massage, stretching and strengthening exercises may be recommended as complementary care.
